How to Summarise  |  Less is more! 

A summary includes the important details from a piece of text.

  • a summary can be long or short
  • use as many of your own words as possible
  • only include key ideas or topics

 

Example:

Short Summary Example:

Ancient societies in the Mediterranean world had powerful armies which protected their empires and helped them to expand. The Roman army was ultimately successful in conquering the Greeks and Egyptians.

 

Long Summary Example:

Ancient societies in the Mediterranean world had powerful armies which protected their empires and helped them to expand.  They believed that the gods were involved in the outcomes of war. The Egyptians had foot soldiers and charioteers. The Greeks had different city-states with their own unique military structures.  The Roman military was very structured, organised and disciplined, and ultimately conquered the Greeks and Egyptians.

 

A good summary...

  • only includes main points
  • uses your own words but keeps important vocabulary
