Around 7 million people—about 29% of the population—live in rural and remote areas (ABS 2017e). These Australians face unique challenges due to their geographic isolation, and they often have poorer health and welfare outcomes than people living in major cities. Despite poorer health outcomes for some, the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey found that Australians living in small towns (of fewer than 1,000 people) and in non-urban areas generally experienced higher levels of life satisfaction than those living in major cities (Wilkins 2015). On average, Australians living in rural and remote areas have shorter lives, higher levels of disease and injury and poorer access to and use of health services, compared with people living in metropolitan areas. Poorer health outcomes in rural and remote areas may be due to multiple factors including lifestyle differences and a level of disadvantage related to education and employment opportunities, as well as access to health services.
