Research skills

Research is pretty easy – visit a website or two, find some quotes and your assignment is on its way, right?

That's true, but if you put in a little more effort, you'll find better information faster and hand in a better assignment. This step-by-step guide shows you how to break down research tasks into manageable parts and find reliable information.

How do I find a book in the library?

Search the online catalogue for the title, author or genre you need (links to the catalogue are on the Norwood Pages, Compass or the Library Website), or use the catalogue computer in the library.  Ask the friendly library staff if you need help!

The library is clearly signed and you will find books in the following areas: Fiction (shelved by genre), Non Fiction (shelved by collection), Graphic Novels, Magazines, VCE Study Resources (yellow sticker on the spine), Senior Fiction (label on the spine).

How do I borrow a book?

Bring your books to the circulation desk when a librarian is on duty, and provide your school username or Compass ID Card.  We can also find your using your first or last name.

How many books can I borrow, and for how long?

Students can borrow up to 6 books, for 3 weeks at a time.

Items in the VCE Collection are available for 1 week only.  Magazines are a 2 week loan.

Holiday borrowing begins before each holidays which allows you to take books for longer periods of time.

What happens if I lose or damage a book?

Lost or damaged books must be paid for by the student responsible.  Please discuss any concerns with library staff.

Can I renew my books?

Books can be renewed many times, unless someone else has requested it!  Books must be brought in and sighted by library staff to be renewed.

What happens if I return a book late?

Students are not allowed to borrow when they have overdue books.  Overdue notices are circulated to your school email address.

What if the book I want is not available?

You can reserve book by logging into the library catalogue, and selecting 'Make a reserve' or dragging a book into the 'Reserves' tab.  Alternatively, come and see library staff at the desk and we will reserve a book for you.

You can suggest books for the library to buy in the Suggestions Book at the library desk.

What else does the library have available for borrowing?

Aside from a very wide range of books and magazines, the library can provide headphones, chargers (limited), board games, card games (recess and lunchtime), USB sticks, stationary items (limited), and more!  Just ask!
